Was incorporating “metabolic” into our name an active descriptor of our specialty or was it just advertising hype? Are patients really concerned about their health or their weight? Are surgeons the true stalwarts of the chronic disease model, or still just interested in short-term monetary gains? It is time to critically and honestly examine who we are and what this specialty truly represents; not just what we do. Perhaps there is a reason we still have less than 1% market share with no viable competition.
