Research/areas of interest: Include the role of energy expenditure and substrate switching in the pathogenesis and treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. His clinical work focuses on the early clinical development of novel pharmacotherapies and environmental approaches to weight management. Other areas of clinical and laboratory investigation include adipose tissue biology, pathobiology and epigenetics & quantitative bioenergetics of the gut microbiome. Aside from his clinical studies, he has done extensive basic research work on the regulation of skeletal muscle substrate switching and mitochondrial function using human primary cultures of skeletal muscle and adipose tissue.
Dr. Smith is a past president of the Obesity Society.
